Sending email newsletters
- how to distribute them professionally and effectively
If you want to your e-mail newsletters to look professional AND arrive in the recipients’ inboxes, don’t use your normal e-mail client to send them. Whether it’s Outlook, Google mail, Hotmail or Incredimail, you’re going to fail.
Email clients aren’t set up to allow the creation of quality, attractive newsletters. They also don’t have personalisation facilities built in (unless you count the creation & sending of e-mails individually as this). Finally, assuming you send out via distribution lists/groups, spam filters are liable to block the mail for this alone.
Far better is to use one of the many e-mail distribution engines or companies around.
If you really want total control and customisation of your newsletters it’s possible to buy and set up your own e-mail distribution system. This takes time, a bit of technical know-how and plenty of patience.
Far better is to use one of the various electronic newsletter companies that exist. They let you create an account, select and customise newsletter templates, upload and maintain distribution lists and generate & send e-mails for you. This way you get attractive, personalised newsletter e-mails that will bypass many of the spam filters out there set up to automatically stop any bulk mailing.
We’ve used Constant Contact for some time to send out our newsletters and can fully recommend them. If you sign up with them through our web site we both get a $30 credit to our accounts.
Well-established and quality alternatives include Campaign Monitor, Lyris and GraphicMail.
