Seasonal thoughts
Has your
business been successful this year? Have you reached the
targets you set yourself last year (You did set them
didn't you?). Has your business allowed you to live
comfortably - or at least at a level where you don't
need to worry about your income on a daily
basis?
If yes, I'm delighted. Business can be
tough and lonely - whether you're starting out or
running a well-established company. Maybe you're ready
to take a breather and reflect on your success and
happiness. In addition, given the season, perhaps it's
time to spread a little cheer and goodwill? That might
be through staff bonuses, helping your local Chamber
with the town Xmas lights or just playing carols in your
office, shop or factory.
If you've had a very
good year or are in the mood to spread a little extra
goodwill, take a look at World Vision's Alternative Gifts
catalogue. They're presents with a
difference!
In case you were wondering why I've
used 'Xmas' and 'Season's Greetings' etc, it's because
I'm a Humanist.
Humanists
don't believe in God - but we do believe strongly in
living our lives in an ethical and moral way. I enjoy
Xmas as much as the next person and don't have any
problems giving presents, dressing up trees and even
singing carols. As long as people get together,
especially families, and celebrate kindness and giving
it seems A Good Thing to me.
What ever your
religion and beliefs, I hope you enjoy the season with
whatever celebrations and traditions seem
right.

Visibility in
'cyberspace'
If you have a web site purely as an adjunct to
your business card, you can skip this
article.
The vast majority of business owners
want their web site to bring them more business, even if
this isn't its main purpose. In this case, how will 'new
business' find you?
Many people looking
for a business or service like yours will search for you
on the Internet using Google, Yahoo etc - the Search
Engines.
How well does your site rank on these
Search Engines? Research shows that if you're not on the
first two or three pages of any search results, the
majority of searchers won't see you.
It's
important to know the terms that people who need/want
your products & services type in when they search.
The words you think they'll use might not be the terms
that people actually use. Luckily
there are tools available to determine this. Some are
free, others relatively expensive.
So how can you
ensure that you're near the top on Google etc for your
chosen search terms? It may not be as difficult as you
think......
We heard recently that around 80% of
Internet searches in the UK are done using Google so
we'll use it as an example.
All Search Engines
index individual pages of a web site and not the site as
a whole. Consequently each page can be 'tuned' for
different search terms.
By tweaking the visible
text in your web pages and some of the invisible
components you can make it more obvious to Google what
your pages are about - your chosen search
terms.
We moved down to Liskeard in Cornwall just
over 18 months ago. Recently we decided it was time to
make sure we were found by people looking for a local
web design company. Initially we've focussed on Web
design Liskeard and Web site design Liskeard but we're
also working on Cornwall too.
Simply by tweaking
a couple of pages on our site, from nowhere, we're now
no. 1 on Google for both terms (and website design
Liskeard too!).
In an article that we'll be
posting on our web site early in the New Year, we'll
give you some guidelines on how to do this for your site
- or what to tell your tame 'webbie'!

meantime, if you'd like some help making your web site
more visible, drop us a line at enquiries@clarihon.co.uk

The lighter
side....
Why the Little Angel is
at the top of the Christmas
Tree
...On Christmas Eve Santa Claus
was getting ready for his annual trip. As he
pulled his favorite pair of red pants on, they
ripped. So, he had to take them off and put on
another pair, which was a bit too tight. He then
went to check on the rest of the preparations.
The elves were on strike. The reindeer had
shin-splints. At this point, Santa was really
hacked off. He went into the kitchen for a glass
of wine, and the bottle was empty. Now he was
really mad.
All of sudden, there was a
knock at the door. Santa, in his angry state,
ignored it. There was another knock. Santa
was in no mood for all of this. When the knock came
again, Santa--filled with rage--threw open the
door.
Standing there was a little angel
who said, "Hi Santa! What do you want me to do
with this Christmas
Tree?"
